The Last Caretaker Demoed by Channel37 Community Manager Jack Pattillo in First Gameplay Footage

Following a reveal at IGN Fan Fest, industry veteran-led gaming studio Channel37 has released the first gameplay capture of its upcoming seafaring first-person survival action-adventure game, The Last Caretaker

Set in a world of endless oceans where only remnants of humanity remain, the first gameplay footage of The Last Caretaker showcases the game's opening area: a derelict docking station where the titular robotic protagonist suddenly awakes from dormancy. Channel37 Community Manager Jack Pattillo (formerly of Rooster Teeth) provides commentary for the footage, introducing some of the game's gameplay systems and speaking to the narrative themes that players will experience.

Starting on March 12, Channel37 Community Manager Jack Pattillo will host weekly livestreams every Wednesday at 10AM PT / 1PM ET / 5PM GMT on the Channel37 Twitch account, offering viewers behind-the-scenes commentary, new footage, and gameplay details of The Last Caretaker before its launch on PC later this summer.

"This is my kind of game through and through," said Channel37 community manager Jack Pattillo. "A deep mystery, survival mechanics that make you think, and real choices that shape how you play. Deciding whether to burn fuel for survival or use it as a weapon for example — these are the moments that make gameplay exciting. It's the kind of game that keeps you on your toes, and I can't wait to show more."

Following the reveal of The Last Caretaker, Antti Ilvessuo, co-founder of Channel37, emphasized just how much more is still to come:

"What Jack described is just a fraction of a fraction of what players can expect in The Last Caretaker. More systems, more resources, more fabrication, more weapons, more enemies — exploration above and below the sea. Human seeds, the Hall of Humanity, rockets, and the desperate fight to keep the mission alive. The list goes on ... and there's more to come!"

Ilvessuo added, "Wishlist now!"

The world has changed. An endless ocean stretches in every direction, its surface broken by the last remnants of those who stayed behind. Machines still hum with forgotten purpose, beacons flicker with old signals, and infrastructure continues its silent operations. But something else stirs — technology repurposed, reshaped to drift in silence.

As the Last Caretaker, a player must navigate this vast ocean, scavenging lost knowledge, reactivating dormant systems, and ensuring the survival of humanity's final remnants. Deep within the Seed Vaults, the last human embryos wait for their journey to the stars. But not all that remains is dormant. Some machines still whisper, still move, still watch.

Key Features of The Last Caretaker

  • Create: Scavenge valuable resources to repair critical systems, upgrade your robotic capabilities, and craft tools essential for maintaining your operational capabilities. Every system you restore and every decision you make defines your purpose.

  • Explore: If a place looks explorable — above or below the ocean — it is. Weathered megastructures, decayed platforms, and forgotten stations still cling to purpose. These aren't just set pieces, they're real locations with a history.

  • Discover: Every structure contains a narrative thread to the past and fragments of human history. If a place feels like it's hiding a secret, it probably is.

  • Nurture: Survival isn't just about food. Human life is shaped by memories. Rebuild them, and you rebuild humanity itself.

  • Survive: The ocean is beautiful, but it is not safe. Rogue machines, biomechanical threats, and unknown forces seek to disrupt your mission. Navigate this world at your own pace, as a resource as simple as light can be your weapon and fear a guide to live another day.

The Last Caretaker releases in Early Access in the summer of 2025 for Windows PC on Steam and the Epic Games Store. A console release will occur at a later date. Future caretakers can wishlist the game now and subscribe to Channel37's Twitch channel to watch its weekly developer livestream series hosted by Community Manager Jack Pattillo.
