1. Introduction

===============================================================================

The game starts with Guybrush Threepwood arriving at the lookout point on Melee
Island, on his quest to become a pirate. After a brief talk with some pirates
down at the SCUMM Bar, he finds out that to become a pirate, he must pass the
three tasks. After passing the test, he hears that the governor of the island,
Elaine Marley, has been kidnapped by a pirate named LeChuck. So Guybrush
decides to assemble a crew and take a boat to Monkey Island, where he can find
the ghost pirate LeChuck and rescue the governor.

Despite being one of the funniest adventure games ever made, it also has enough
serious moments to make it interesting to play. The graphics are good, with
quarter of the screen being taken up by a section where you can select
commands, such as Look At, or Pick Up, and the other three quarters of the
screen being taken up by the main animation window. This takes some getting
used to after playing later LucasArts full screen games such as Sam & Max and
Day of the Tentacle, but after a while it just feels natural.

The puzzles are very good in this game, with most ranging from simple (such as
getting the fish in the SCUMM Bar), to difficult (such as finding out what to
do with the cake), but even if you get stuck on a puzzle the game doesn't get
too frustrating, as there always seems to be something new to do in the game.
There are many characters dotted around the islands, and there are numerous
topics to speak about with them, most of which range from mildly funny to
completely hilarious. Overall, this is one of the best adventure games on the
PC, and is a great start to an excellent series of games.

2.1. Part One: The Three Trials
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VILLAGE

At the start of the game, walk down the path from the lookout point. Go right
along the dock and open the door to the SCUMM Bar. Enter the SCUMM Bar and walk
right to enter the room with the three pirates. Walk close to the fireplace and
wait for the chef to exit from the door on the right. When the door opens and
the chef leaves, quickly walk right and enter the kitchen.

In the kitchen, get the pot under the table. Get the hunk of meat on top of the
table. Use the hunk of meat with the pot o' stew. Open the door on the right
and walk near the fish to find that a bird gets in the way. Walk onto the plank
at the bottom-right corner to fire the bird up into the air. Do this three
times. On the third time, quickly get the fish and go back into the kitchen.

Get the meat from the pot o' stew. Use the fish with the pot o' stew. Get the
stewed fish and exit the kitchen. Talk to the important-looking pirates. Say "I
want to be a pirate." Say "I'll just be running along now." Walk left past the
curtain and exit the SCUMM Bar. Walk left along the dock and go up the cliff
path. Walk through the archway and take the top-right path.

CLEARING

Walk down the path on the left and enter the circus tent. In the circus tent,
interrupt the Fettucini brothers by selecting any of the five speech options.
When they ask you if you want to perfrom the cannon stunt, say "OK, I'll do
it." When they ask you if you have a helmet, say "Of course I have a helmet.
What sort of idiot do you take me for?" Give the pot to the Fettucini brothers.
After Guybrush takes a painful landing from the cannon, select either of the
speech options when the Fettucini brothers ask if you're OK. After exiting the
tent, climb up the path on the right and exit the clearing.

VILLAGE

After walking down the cliff path, walk right along the dock and go through the
archway at the far right side of the area. Talk to the citizen of Melee and say
"No, but I once had a barber named Dominique." When he asks you if you want to
buy a map, say "I'll take it. It'll make a swell gift." Walk left and enter the
first door on the right. Enter the voodoo shop. Get the chicken on the table.
Open the door and exit the voodoo shop.

Walk through the archway under the clock. Open the first door along the street
and enter the shop. Get the sword on top of the chests on the first floor. Get
the shovel near the safe on the second floor. Talk to the storekeeper and say
"About this sword..." and then say "I want it." Say "About this shovel..." and
then say "I want it." Say "I think I'd just like to browse." Exit the shop.

Walk through the archway on the right. Talk to the pirates on the left and say
"Do you know where I can find a treasure map around here?" When the pirate asks
if you want the minutes, say "No, but I'll take one if you give me two pieces
of eight." Say "I'll just be running along, now." Go right and walk through the
archway. Walk left along the dock and go up the cliff path at the other side.
At the lookout point, walk through the archway and take the top-right path.

FORK

After arriving in the fork, take either exit at the top of the screen. Pick up
the yellow petal. Exit left. Exit right. Exit left. Exit right. Exit up. Exit
right. Exit left. Exit up. Exit left. Exit up. Walk right and use the shovel
with the X sign to get a T-shirt. Walk left and exit the area. Pirates will
appear at various positions on the map screen at this point in the game. If
they meet Guybrush on the path, you'll be given the option to fight. Ignore the
pirates for now, as there are still some things to do first.

VILLAGE

Walk right along the dock and go through the archway at the far right side of
the area. Walk through the archway under the clock. Walk left through the
archway and follow the cliff path to arrive outside of the Governor's mansion.
In the inventory, use the yellow petal with the stewed meat to create meat with
condiment. Use the meat with the poodles, which will make them fall asleep.
Open the door and enter the mansion.

Inside the mansion, open the nearest doors and walk through the entrance. After
the cutscene, walk down the stairs and exit the mansion. Walk right and follow
the trail back to the town. Enter the first doorway before the archway. Talk to
Otis. Walk through the doorway to return to the town. Walk right and go through
the door at the right side of the alley to enter the shop. Talk to the
storekeeper and say "I could really use a breath mint." Say "I think I'd just
like to browse." Exit the shop.

Walk left and go through the first doorway before the archway. Give the breath
mints to Otis. When he talks to you, select one of the bottom two options. Give
the gopher repellent to Otis and he'll give you a cake. Walk through the
doorway to return to the town. Walk left through the archway and follow the
cliff path to arrive outside of the Governor's mansion. Enter the mansion.

Inside the mansion, open the cake to find a file. Walk to the gaping hole.
After another cutscene, the sheriff will ask you about the idol. Select any of
the speech options. Select any of the speech options when the Governor speaks
to you. After she leaves, walk left and open the door. The sheriff will appear.
Select any of the speech options and he'll throw you off the dock into the sea.

In the sea, get the fabulous idol, and Guybrush will automatically get a sword
before climbing up the ladder. After the cutscene, walk left along the dock and
go up the cliff path at the other side. At the lookout point, walk through the
archway and take the top-right path.

HOUSE

On the way to the house for the first time, you will be stopped by a troll on
the bridge. Give the stewed fish to the troll to pass over to the other side of
the bridge, and then continue to the house. Outside of the house, open the door
and the sword trainer will appear. Select the first speech option. When he says
you don't have what it takes, select the first speech option three times. When
he asks you how much you have, say "I've got 30 pieces of eight." When he asks
to see your sword, say "OK, check it out." When the sword trainer insults you,
select any of the four speech options. Outside of the house, walk down the path
on the left or right side to exit the area.

MAP

Now that you've got some insult answers from the sword trainer, it's time to
fight the pirates. Wait on the path for a pirate to walk up to Guybrush. When
they speak to you, say "My name is Guybrush Threepwood. Prepare to die!" It's
your turn first to throw an insult, so choose any of the speech options and
read the answer from the pirate.

Every time you select an insult that the pirate doesn't know the answer to,
you'll move forward. Every time you select an insult that the pirate does know
the answer to, you'll move back, and it's the pirate's turn to answer a
question. When the pirate says a new insult, that insult will be added to the
list of insults. When the pirate answers an insult correctly, you'll get his
answer added to the list of Guybrush's answers. The full list of pirate insults
and answers can be found in section three of this FAQ.

VILLAGE

Walk right along the dock and go through the archway at the far right side of
the area. Walk through the archway under the clock. Enter the shop. Talk to the
storekeeper and ask about the Sword Master. The storekeeper will leave to go
and find the Sword Master. Exit the shop. Follow the storekeeper along to the
lookout point, and take the top-right path to exit the area.

FORK

Follow the storekeeper through the forest maze until you get to an area with a
sign near a log. Walk over the log and exit right. After the storekeeper
leaves, cross over the bridge and walk up to the Sword Master. When the Sword
Master speaks to you, say "My name is Guybrush Threepwood. I've come to kill
you." You will then have to fight the Sword Master in a similar to way to the
pirates. The full list of Sword Master insults and answers can be found in
section three of this FAQ. After defeating the Sword Master, walk across the
bridge and exit the area by taking the path on the left.

VILLAGE

After the ghost ship has sailed off into the distance, the lookout will talk to
you. Select one of the bottom three four speech options. After the lookout
leaves, walk right along the dock and enter the SCUMM Bar. Get the three mugs
from the left side of the bar. Walk past the curtain and get the two mugs from
the right side of the bar. Enter the kitchen and use the mug on the barrel to
get some grog.

The grog will eat away the mug, so you will have to be quick. Look at the mug
in the inventory. Wait for the mug to change appearance two times, and then
quickly use the mug near death with one of the other normal mugs. Exit the
kitchen. Walk left and exit the SCUMM Bar. Walk right along the dock and go
through the archway at the far right side of the area. Walk through the archway
under the clock.

Walk left and go through the first doorway before the archway leading to the
Governor's mansion. Use the mug with grog on it on the lock of the left cell to
release Otis. Go through the doorway. After the cutscene, walk through the
archway on the right. Go right and walk through the archway leading to the
dock. Walk left along the dock and go up the cliff path at the other side. At

by taking the path on the left.

Use the chicken on the cable to cross the gap to the island. On the other side
of the gap, open the door and enter the house. When Meathook talks to you, say

he'll ask you what you want to do. Select any of the four speech options. After
the cutscene, open the door and choose any of the nine new commands on the
murderous winged devil, and Meathook will agree to be on your crew. Outside the
house, use the chicken on the cable to leave the island. Walk to the path near
the sign.

much to spend." Stan will introduce you to the Sea Monkey, and will ask you how
much you'll be willing to spend. Say "Actually, I was hoping to get one on
credit." He'll tell you that the storekeeper in town might lend you some
credit. Stop talking to Stan, and walk left. Stan will stop you before you
leave, and will give you a card and a compass. Continue left to exit the Used
Ship Emporium.

VILLAGE

Walk right along the dock and go through the archway at the far right side of
the area. Walk through the archway under the clock. Enter the shop. Talk to the
storekeeper and say "I'm interested in procuring a note of credit." When he
asks you if you have a job, say "Yes, of course I do." When the storekeeper
returns with the note of credit, select any of the five speech options when he
asks you what your job is. When he asks you what else you want, ask about the
Sword Master, and he'll leave the shop.

one again?" When Stan asks you how much you'll be willing to spend, say "I got
credit from the storekeeper. Will you take it?" Say "Let's talk extras". Say "I
think I can live without that particular piece of junk." for five of the extras
that Stan mentions. Stop talking about extras. Say "Well, what do you think
it's worth?" Say "Forget it. I don't need this boat anyway." When he calls you
back, say "Well, maybe you're right..." Say "I'd like to make you an offer."
When he asks you how much, say "All right! 5000! But that's my final offer!"
Walk left and exit the Used Ship Emporium.

VILLAGE

After the cutscene, Otis and Carla will arrive to talk to you. Select any of
