2. What is this Monster Collection?

The Monster Collection is a book (Valuable) that shows you the stats of
monsters previously fought, thus allowing you to know their strengths and
weaknesses. This is a great improvement over the previous Tales games since
they do not include such a feature and thus render any attempts to fully
understand the monsters in the game impossible.
Whenever you need to refer to the Monster Collection, just enter the
item menu and select the valuables sub-menu, and use the Monster Collection in
the valuable list like you would use a normal item. The data in the book will
be displayed in numerical series and you will be able to get whatever info you
need by scanning through the pages.
This wonderful item can be acquired quite early in the game and thus
allow you to make full use of it as soon as possible. To get it, after Prof.
Mazet sends you to Undine Stream to get the cooperation of Undine, return to
him and he will present this book to you.

3. Explanation of terms

- No.
This is the number of the monster as displayed in the Monster Collection
book. It starts from 0 and ends at 255, totalling 256 monsters.
- Name
This is the name of the monster as used in the game. Names with a (*) are
monsters that are either bosses, sub-bosses or those that you can only fight
a limited number of times.
- HP
This is the amount of hitpoints or life the monster has. HP values listed
in this FAQ are for normal difficulty monsters, for hard difficulty, this
value is increased by 20%, for hardcore difficulty, this value is increased
by 50%.
- EXP
This is the amount of experience acquired by defeating the monster.
Experience gained decreases as your level increases and thus you may not
get the amount of experience listed in this FAQ when you defeat a monster.
- Gald
This is the amount of gald acquired by defeating the monster.
- Attack
This is the attack value or strength of the monster. The higher this
value is, the higher the amount of damage it can deal to your characters.
Attack values listed in this FAQ are for normal difficulties monsters, for
hard difficulty, this value is increased by 20%, for hardcore difficulty,
this value is increased by 50%.
- Defense
This is the defense value of the monster. The higher this value is, the
lower the amount of damage you can deal to it. Having a defense value of 0
does not mean that you can deal a lot of damage to the monster.
- Intelligence
This is the intelligence value of the monster. It affects the damage of
the spells of the monster, if it has any. The higher the value, the higher
the damage the monster's spells can inflict. Intelligence values listed in
this FAQ are for normal difficulty monsters, for hard difficulty, this value
is increased by 20%, for hardcore difficulty, this value is increased by 50%.
- Items
This shows the items that the monster can drop when you defeat it and any
items that you can steal from it. The higher the percentage, the greater the
chance of acquiring it by defeating it or stealing from it. To steal from a
monster, use Chat's Rover Tool skill on the monster.
- Attack Element
This shows the element of the physical attack of the monster. By
equipping equipment that increases your defense against the particular element,
you can decrease the damage that the monster can inflict on you physically. If
the monster's attack has no element, then this will not be shown.
- Elemental Defense
This shows the monster's resistance to the various elements. By knowing
this, you can use spells to your advantage by using elements that hurt it
more and prevent from using spells that will not have much effect.
As the actual percentage of the monster's elemental defense is quite hard
to say for sure, I used a system of my own to show their strengths and
weaknesses:
-5: -100% resistance, -4: -99% to -75% resistance, -3: -74% to -50% resistance
-2: -49% to -25% resistance, -1: -24% to -1% resistance
1: 1% to 25% resistance, 2: 26% to 50% resistance, 3: 51% to 75% resistance
4: 76% to 99% resistance, 5: 100% resistance
If the monster has 0% resistance for an element, then this will not be
shown for that element.
- Location
This provides a possible place to find the monster. Usually, only the
place with the highest encounter rate or the first place to find the monster
will be shown.
In addition to the terms used above, I will sometimes include my own notes
for some of the monsters in the list. Also, monsters have accuracy and evade
just like your characters do, but they are not shown as those values are not
given in the Monster Collection book. Same as attack, defense and intelligence,
accuracy and evade increases in hard and hardcore difficulty.
