I will do my best to keep adding players if I think of any more.
I may also add a training section in the future.
I hope that some people find this useful.
This guide is for Football Manager 2005 with the patch, so some
players or tactics may not work as well on unpatched
versions of the game.

3 examples of players who are brilliant before the patch and either
don't appear or aren't as good afterwards are Daniel Bierofka,
Emmanuel Petit and Frank De Boer.

To search press Ctrl + F then type the name of the section you are
looking for or the 3 letter code next to the name if you're
looking for players.

3. Lower League Players

Most lower league clubs don't have much money, so its difficult to sign
players. Using loans is crucial to lower division success, which is
why I've listed quite a few potential loan signings. Also, getting
players on free transfers can be very useful for lower league clubs.
A good tip is to always check for unattached players at the start of every
season, because there are usually some good players who are willing to
join lower division clubs.

4. Tactics

(a) Basic Formation

When choosing a formation, choose one that suits your teams
strengths. ie. If you have lots of good attacking midfielders,
play 4-2-3-1. If centre back is your strongest position, play
5-3-2. If you just have an average squad, just play 4-4-2
Attacking, as this usually works well. However, if you're a
small team playing against someone a lot better than you
4-5-1 is usually the way to go.

(b) Mentality

When choosing the mentality, consider your teams defensive
ability and the strength of your opponents. Defensive is
usually the best mentality especially if you have fast players,
because you'll score more than enough goals on the counter
attack. However, if you're playing against poor opposition and
your defence is quite good, an attacking mentality should produce
a big win, but against equal opposition, I find that playing
an attacking style makes you concede too many goals.

(c) Creative Freedom

Its best to set this for individual players. Give your best
attacking players lots of creative freedom, so they can do
what they want. Give holding midfielders and defenders little, so
they're not constantly caught out of position.

(d) Passing Style

This again depends on the players that you've got. If you have
players with good first touch, passing and off the ball, then
a short passing style should work well. If not, play direct,
but you'll need forwards with good strength and aerial ability.
Only play long ball, if your midfield is totally rubbish and
you've got strikers with great physical stats.

(e) Tempo

A slow tempo should lead to your team keeping possession better,
because they'll take more time over their passes, but this will
give the opposition more time to organise their defence.
If you want your team to take the initiative whenever an opposition
defender is out of position, play with a quick tempo.
However ,this may lead to more misplaced passes and less possession.

(f) Width

If you have good wingers and/or full backs, play with a lot
of width to give them the space to use their skill. If your wide
men aren't very good or you're playing a really good team that
you'll have to do a lot of defending against, play narrow.
This will make your team harder to break down, but it will limit
attacking options, as the centre of the pitch could get crowded
and make difficult to find a way through the opposition.

(g) Closing Down

Usually its good to set this to often, unless your players have a
lack of stamina. Defensive midfielders should always have this set
high, so the opposing midfield doesn't get too much time
and space on the ball.
With attacking players, this isn't so important and it may be better
to set it to rarely, so they're saving energy for when a goalscoring
chance comes their way.

(h) Defensive Line

This depends on the pace and acceleration of your defenders. If
they're slow, sit deep or you'll get murdered on the counter attack.
Only push up if your defence has pace and can catch opposing
players who beat the offside trap.

(i) Tackling

Usually leave this at normal, unless you're playing a friendly or
another meaningless game, then you set it to easy to avoid cards
and injuries. If you're a small team playing against a lot of skillful
players who have low strength, set it to hard to unsettle them.

(j) Focus Passing

Usually pass down both flanks, as this gives your team more width
and penetration, unless you have really good central midfielders
and poor wingers, then pass through the middle.

(k) Marking

This depends on your players marking stats. If they're good markers,
set them to man, if they're not, set them to zonal. This mainly
applies to defenders and central midfielders. You might want
to set defensive midfielders to zonal, regardless of their
marking ability, because this means they will always fill the
hole in front of your defence instead of occasionally following
someone out wide, leaving space for an opposition midfielder
to run into the box.

(l) Player Instructions

Look at the players stats. If they have good dribbling, tell them to
run with the ball. If they have good passing, tell them to do through
balls etc. Only tell them to do tight marking, if they
have good marking. If they're a lone striker, tell them to hold up
the ball.

(m) Tactical Ploys

If your team is struggling during a match, some of these ideas may
be helpful.

1. If one of the opposition defenders has a yellow card, get your
forwards and wingers to run at them in the hope that they'll make
a rash challenge when trying to stop your player and get themself
sent off.

2. If your opponents are running rings around you, look at their
strength ratings. If they're skillful, but weak use some hard tackles
to try and disrupt their
play.

3. If you have a good goalscoring midfielder, don't restrict them.
Make your strikers run into wide positions. This should create
some space in the middle for your midfielders to run into.

NOTE: Almost all phyios have 20 physio, so there is little difference
between them all. To choose an assistant manager, just select a coach
with very good all round stats
JPA, JPP and tactical knowledge are useful skills for assistants to have.

JPA = Judging Player Ability
JPP = Judging Player Potential

For scouts, you want someone with high JPA and JPP.
For coaches, you want someone with high coaching stats and motivation. Working
with youngsters is very important if you have a lot of young players in your
squad.

6.Training

When setting training, the technique that I use and seems to work quite
well is to set each type of player to their specific schedule. ie.
Goalkeepers to the goalkeeping schedule
Defender to the defending schedule
Midfielders to the midfielders schedule
Attackers to the attacking schedule

If you don't like these schedules and would like to try something
more intensive, then you could make some alterations and use the below
schedules.

GoalKeepers:

Day Early Morning Late Morning Afternoon
--- ------------- ------------ ---------
Sn Handling Agility(GK) Handling
M Sprints Crosses 5-a-side(small pitch)
T Technique distribution Weight Training
W Crosses pig in the midl distribution
TH Agility(GK) Training Match Set Pieces (Def)
F pig in the midl overload(def) 5-a-side(large pitch)
St Shot stopping Closing down overload (def)

Defenders:

Day Early Morning Late Morning Afternoon
--- ------------- ------------ ---------
Sn Set Pieces(Def) overload (def) Tactical Training
M Crosses Country Tactical Train. Weight Training
T Set Pieces(att) overload (def) Closing Down Session
W Crosses country Set Pieces(att) pig in the middle
TH 5-a-side(large) technique Training Match
F Crosses pig in middle Tactical Training
St Set Pieces(def) Crosses Country Heading

Midfielders:

Day Early Morning Late Morning Afternoon
--- ------------- ------------ ---------
Sn Technique Shadow Play overload (def)
M 5-a-side(large) Set Pieces(att) Crosses
T pig in middle overload (att) Tactical Training
W overload (def) Shadow play 5-a-side(large)
TH 5-a-side(small) Set Pieces(def) Crosses Country
F overload (att) Sprints Sprints
St Shooting Sprints overload (att)

Attackers:

Day Early Morning Late Morning Afternoon
--- ------------- ------------ ---------
Sn overload (att) overload (att) Set Pieces(att)
M 5-a-side(large) Closing Down pig in the middle
T penalties penalties crosses
W Set Pieces(att) Set Pieces(att) Shooting
TH Heading technique overload (att)
F Sprints Heading Shooting
St Sprints Set peices(att) pig in the middle

However, if you use these schedules, it is important to give your
players the day off after a match, because they are quite intensive and
there aren't any rest periods. If some of your
players start to get tired, consider switching them to another schedule.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I get new skins and face packs?
A: www.thedugout.net is probably the best site for this now that sortitoutsi

A: Yes

Q: Why is the German national team weird and where is Oliver Kahn?
A: If you go to

A: For it to work, your screen resolution must be higher than 1024x768
You can try and change this by unticking the full screen box in preferences.
If that doesn't work, right-click on the FM2005 icon and bring up the properties
screen. On the shortcut tab, type " -small_screen" after the last quotation

Remember to leave a space before you type small_screen. After typing in this
line,
your game should be in windowed mode the next time you start it up.
