Battle Arena Toshinden

Secret Players:
To get Sho you wait until the game text is flying in from the screen sides and
then using controller 1, you go d, db, b,square and you will hear "fight". Now
wait until the game goes to demo, then using control 2 hit start and the title
screen will come back again with text flying in from the sides then you go
b,f,b,f,b,square. You will here fight again now when you go to charcter
selection to get sho, highlight Kayin then hold up and hit X. The first part of
the code is for Gaia, to get him highlight Eiji then hold down, X.
You must complete the code before the text centers itself on the screen.
1) Gaia code
2) Sho code
3) Camera tricks
1) Boot the game and wait for the title screen to appear. After the
BAT logo slurps up onto the top of the screen, the One Player/Two
Player/Options text will enter the screen from the sides. BEFORE
the text makes it to the center, press D, DL, L, Square. If done
correctly you will hear a voice say "Fight!" and the menu text will
turn pink. Now go to the character select screen and highlight
Eiji. Press and hold UP and hit X. You'll be able to fight as Gaia.
2) Enter the Gaia code. Now wait for the title screen to come up
just like last time. While the text is coming onscreen, hit L, R,
L, R, Square. Now go to the character select screen, highlight
Kayin, hold DOWN and hit X. Now you can fight as Sho.
3) Go into the options menu and select control type H2. Now go down
to the "Camera Action" option. Scroll through the options and
you'll see one called "Your Self." Select any of control types
A5-H5 and you'll see that the L1/R1/L2/R2 buttons have now changed
to camera controls. Enter the game and press START at any time to
pause the game. While paused, use the L/R buttons and the control
pad to fiddle about with camera angles and views. While doing this,
you can hold all four action buttons and hit SELECT to remove the
pause menu and then the energy bars. While all this is going on,
pressing SELECT on controller two will toggle a frame advance/slow
motion feature. Pressing select on controller one will change
between rotate/tilt and zoom/pan controls.

Overview:

This file attempts to establish a listing of that which cannot be
found in the manual for the North American release of BAT. Everything
else is irrelevant since you should have gotten a manual when you
purchased your game. If you did not receive a manual, your game could
be an illegal version. I suggest you contact Sony if this is the case
(Piracy only jacks up the legitimate price, which sucks!). It may
also be that you bought a used version without a manual. In either
case, there are a number of FAQs floating around on the web which
contain all the junk about character profiles AND of course the listed
special moves for each character. Go there for that information.

Also, for those of you who have not read your manual through fully: do
so. You may miss simple tips like changing the colour of your
character or allowing the L1/L2 and R1/R2 keys to be used as your
special moves in very easy and easy mode. Also, if your character's
power bar is flashing red, you can perform their desperation move by
pressing all the L and R buttons at once. This can make the game more
enjoyable for inexperienced players facing off against people who know
it all. Hell, it can even be more fun for the experienced players
going up against those with godly powers in easy reach. I always
enjoy being kept on my toes in a fight.

For those of you who don't know, Gaia is not the final character of
the game. If you play the game on normal level or harder and beat
everyone without continuing, you will have the honour of taking on
Sho. Sho is a cross between Eiji and Kayan, with extra speed thrown
in for fun.

Anyway, here follows the undocumented moves for ALL the characters.
After that is the section on codes for playing with the end characters
and fooling around with the camera angles (you sick little children!).
Finally, it is followed by a final plea to shed some light on an
enigma I found within the game.

Syntax Of Listings:

F = FORWARD WS = WEAK SLASH
B = BACK HS = HARD SLASH
U = UP WK = WEAK KICK
D = DOWN HK = HARD KICK

And of course Start, Select, L1, L2, R1, and R2 refer to their
respective buttons on the controller. I hope the meaning of (JUMP) is
obvious.

Button presses follow in progression from left to right. Each button
press is separated by a comma. Multiple button presses at the same
time are denoted by chaining them with a plus sign. Example:

(JUMP), F, DF, D, DB, B, WK + HK, WS + HS

This would be done by first jumping in any direction. You would then
do a half circle motion on the arrows, starting from FORWARD and
ending at BACK. Then you'd tap the WEAK and HARD KICK buttons (at
the same time). Finally, you'd tap the WEAK and HARD SLASH buttons
(again, at the same time). A combination of two directions represents
a diagonal (ie. DF represents the diagonal between DOWN and FORWARD).

Secret Moves:

NOTE: Desperation moves (DM) only work when your character's power bar
is flashing red. Secret moves (SM) and special moves (SP) work at any
time. Some secret moves are very tricky to perform: they only work as
you are coming out of another move (using a (JUMP) can be useful).
Fo's and Mondo's are especially like this. Have patience and persist
and you will be rewarded.

Eiji's SM: U, D, U, D, F, B, F, B, HS + HK
Eiji's DM: F, DF, D, DB, B, DB, D, DF, F, HS

Kayin's SM: F, DF, D, DB, B, DB, B, F, B, HK + WK
Kayin's DM: F, DF, D, DB, B, DB, D, DF, F, HS

Sofia's SM: DF, D, DB, D, DF, B, F, D, HS + HK
Sofia's DM: F, B, F, B, HS
Sofia's Taunt: F, DF, D, DF, F, B, D, HS + WK

Rungo's SM: UF, U, UB, B, DB, F, B, D, HS + HK
Rungo's DM: B, DB, D, DF, F, DF, D, DB, B, HS

Fo's SM1: F, UF, U, UB, B, WS + HK
Fo's SM2: WK, WS, HS, HK, B, F, B, F, HS + HK
Fo's DM: F, B, DB, D, DF, F, B, HS
Fo's Taunt: F, DF, D, DF, F, B, D, HS + WK

Mondo's SM: F, UF, U, UB, B, F, DF, D, HS + HK
Mondo's DM: D, DF, F, D, DF, F, B, HS

Duke's SM: DF, D, DB, D, DF, D, B, F, WS + HK
Duke's DM: DB, D, DF, F, B, HS

Ellis' SM1: F, UF, U, UB, B, WS + HK
Ellis' SM2: DF, D, DB, D, DF, B, F, D, HS + HK
Ellis' DM: F, B, F, B, HS

Gaia's SP1: B, DB, D, DF, F, WS or HS
Gaia's SP2: F, B, DF, WS or HS
Gaia's SP3: F, DF, D, DB, B, WK or HK
Gaia's SM: DF, D, DB, D, DF, B, F, D, HS + HK
Gaia's DM: F, D, F, HS

Sho's SP1: D, DF, F, WS or HS
Sho's SP2: F, D, DF, WS or HS
Sho's SP3: B, D, DB, WS or HS
Sho's SP4: D, DB, B, WK or HK
Sho's SP5: (jump), D, DB, B, WK or HK
Sho's SP6: D, DB, B, UB, WK or HK
Sho's SP7: (jump), D, U, WK or HK
Sho's SM: D, F, UF, U, UB, B, D, HS + WK
Sho's DM: F, DF, D, DB, B, DB, D, DF, F, HS

NOTE: Sho's SP7 can be done from a standing position: it works with or
without a jump.

Codes And Other Related Info:

Gaia Code: Turn on your machine and press START to skip past the
introduction. When the title screen pops up, the words 1P GAME, VS
HUMAN, VS COMPUTER, and OPTIONS scroll into the middle of the screen
from the side. While they scroll on, enter this code on controller 1:
DOWN, DOWN-LEFT, LEFT, WEAK SLASH. If you do this properly you will
hear the word "FIGHT". At the character select screen hold UP and
press any attack button. This will select Gaia as your character.
VERY C00L!

Sho Code: First, you must enter the GAIA CODE. Then you have to get
the title screen to appear again. To do this, wait until the
demonstration starts up (15 seconds of no controller input at the
title screen will load the demonstration). While the demo is running,
press START on controller 1. This takes you back to the title screen.
Now, when the options scroll on this time, enter this code on
controller 2: LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, WEAK SLASH. You should
hear "FIGHT" confirm your code again. Then, when selecting your
character, press DOWN and any attack button. This lets you use Sho.
Once again, VERY C00L!

Secret Move Code: For this one to work, the SHO CODE has to have been
entered (which logically means that the GAIA CODE was entered too).
Let the demo load up, but use the START button on controller 2 to stop
it. This time as the options scroll in, do this on controller 1:
DOWN-LEFT, WEAK KICK. You will hear the word "FANTASTIC". Go to
OPTIONS and change the controller setup so that L1, L2, R1, and R2 are
set as SPECIAL buttons. This allows you to use your character's
secret move at any time by pressing (L1 + L2 + R1 + R2 + SELECT).
C00L as well, but real warriors realize that true strength lies in
being able to do things the "proper" way. This is best used by an
inexperienced player against an experienced player to make the game
more interesting.

Level Select Code: After entering the SECRET MOVE CODE, load up the
friendly demo one more time, using START on controller 1 to stop it.
As the options scroll on, enter on controller 2: LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT,
RIGHT, LEFT, WEAK SLASH. You will hear "FANTASTIC" once again. This
allows you to use any controller configuration with any difficulty
level (the plus of this is you can use the SPECIAL setting for
individual special moves as well as the combined (L1 + L2 + R1 + R2 +
SELECT) secret move ability.

Camera Angles: When I tried out the documented camera options, I was
annoyed that I could only change the camera angle and couldn't scroll
and zoom the view. Well, it turns out there are some hidden features
which allow you to change to nearly any view. In OPTIONS, select a
control type that has no use for the L1 to R2 buttons. You can
then choose a camera options called YOUR SELF. Now choose a control
configuration which has camera options for the L/R buttons. Do the
same thing for controller 2. Then start up a game and pause it.
Press (WS + HS + WK + HK + SELECT). The OPTIONS menu will disappear.
Do the same thing again and the power bars/timer will disappear. The
L/R buttons on controller 1 let you zoom and scroll, while UP and DOWN
let you move the camera in those respective ways. Controller 2 takes
on the basic angle functions, and pressing SELECT will allow you to
view things frame by frame. After you set things up the way you like
them, you can press (WS + HS + WK + HK + SELECT) again to return
things to normal, or you can leave the power bars off. In either
case, press START on controller 1 when you are happy with the way
things are. One final tip: when the game is paused, you have the
added bonus of being able to view things from below the floor (it will
become invisible). This is an interesting way to play the game.

The Enigma:

The very first time I realized there was more to BAT than meets the
eye was when I decided to play it as an audio CD. To see what I mean,
turn on your PSX without a CD in the unit. Choose the CD Player
option. Then pop in your BAT disc. The PSX will treat it like an
audio CD and you will see that there are 14 tracks on the disc. Here
is a listing of what's on those tracks:

1 - Data 8 - Duke's Theme
2 - Eiji's Theme 9 - Ellis' Theme
3 - Kayin's Theme 10 - Gaia's Theme
4 - Sofia's Theme 11 - Sho's Theme
5 - Rungo's Theme 12 - ** UNKNOWN **
6 - Fo's Theme 13 - Introduction
7 - Mondo's Theme 14 - Finale

When I did this, I didn't know at the time that Sho existed. So I had
never heard tracks 11 and 12. I figured that they were two hidden
characters. I did amazingly stupid things to try and encounter these
two characters (I put the game on VERY HARD and set point to 7, and
played until I beat all the characters. Unfortunately, I had to
continue many times, so I didn't encounter any hidden characters, but
I did become very good at the game :). Finally, I tried to beat the
game without continuing on VERY HARD. Lots of experience later, I
finally encountered Sho. Victory was mine! But no second hidden
character popped up after I defeated Sho, and all of my further crazy
attempts have ended in failure. WHO DOSS THIS ELUSIVE 12th MUSIC
TRACK BELONG TO?! Perhaps we will never know. I am hoping that
someone out there knows the answer.

Credits:

Unfortunately, this is version 1.0. No one has added anything beyond
my knowledge yet. If you have spotted a mistake or noticed that I have
missed something, let me know at:

I'll be sure to include your name and my deepest thanks for your
contribution in the next version of this document. You can also say
"hi" and tell me how I can make the next version easier to understand
(if possible). And if you really want, you can send me money at my
surface mail address found at the end of this document. Any amount is
fine, I'm not greedy. :) If 40 people send me $1 I'll feel fully
compensated for the time I spent proofing this file to make sure it
was error free.

I would like to thank Sony for making the greatest game machine ever,
and Takara Co., LTD. for making a pretty C00L game. I'm anxiously
awaiting the day I can pick up a copy of BAT2.
